We are about to explore Costa Brava, Catalonia’s famous coastline in northeastern Spain. Stretching from Blanes, about 60 km northeast of Barcelona, to the French border, this region is known for its rugged cliffs, hidden coves, golden beaches, and charming villages.
The nickname “Wild Coast” perfectly captures the dramatic cliffs and untouched beauty that await us. Whether we are seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural experiences, Costa Brava offers something for everyone.

Best Time to Visit

For us, the best time to visit is from May to September, when the weather is warm (20–30°C), the Mediterranean is perfect for swimming, and local festivals bring vibrant culture to life. Summer (July–August) is the busiest season, so visiting in May, June, or September is ideal for fewer crowds. Seasonal seafood and local markets add extra charm during these months.

Getting There and Transportation

- From Barcelona: Trains run from Barcelona Sants Station to Blanes, taking about 1.5 hours. Ticket prices range from $9–$13 per person.
- By car: Renting a car costs $40–$70/day, giving us freedom to explore hidden beaches and smaller villages.
- Local buses: Connect most coastal towns, fares around $2–$6 per ride.
- Taxis or rideshares: Short rides in towns usually cost $5–$12.
Tips: Parking in town centers is limited during summer; early arrival is recommended.

Must-See Towns and Attractions

- Blanes: The gateway to Costa Brava. Visit Marimurtra Botanical Garden ($6–$11, 9:30–19:00), stroll along long sandy beaches, and enjoy the lively promenade.
- Tossa de Mar: Medieval walled town with Vila Vella Castle ($8, 10:00–18:00). Hotels cost $100–$180/night, and meals range $16–$36.
- Lloret de Mar: Lively beaches and Santa Clotilde Gardens ($6, 10:00–19:00). Accommodation: $90–$200/night, dining: $15–$35 per meal.
- Cadaqués: Artistic village, home to Dalí House-Museum ($16, 10:00–18:00, closed Tuesdays). Boutique hotels: $120–$220/night.
- Calella de Palafrugell: Quaint fishing village with pebble beaches. Meals: $15–$32. Great for quiet walks and fresh seafood.

Activities and Natural Attractions

- Hiking: Trails along the Camí de Ronda connect cliffs, coves, and beaches. Free access, open year-round.
- Swimming & Snorkeling: Secluded coves like Cala Pola and Cala Futadera are perfect for enjoying crystal-clear waters.
- Photography & Sightseeing: Cap de Creus Natural Park offers dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters; free entry.
- Markets & Festivals: Weekly markets in Blanes and Palafrugell, typically 9:00–14:00, showcase local crafts, fresh produce, and souvenirs.

Accommodation and Dining

- Hotels & Guesthouses: Prices range $80–$220/night, depending on season and location. Seaside hotels in Tossa de Mar and boutique guesthouses in Cadaqués are particularly recommended.
- Dining: Local meals cost $15–$40, with fresh seafood, Catalan tapas, and pastries as highlights. Restaurants usually open 12:00–15:00 and 19:00–22:00.
Tips: Book hotels in advance during peak season. Some smaller villages have limited dining options, so carrying snacks or water can be useful.

Travel Tips

1. Wear comfortable shoes for walking along cliffs and cobblestone streets.
2. Bring sunscreen and a hat—even on cloudy days.
3. Early mornings and late afternoons are best for photography and quiet beaches.
4. Respect private property; some coves are near villas.
5. Tap water is safe to drink; using a reusable bottle is environmentally friendly.
