A 40-series tire, for example, has a sidewall height that is 40 percent of its section width. You give up some cushioning from that shorter sidewall, but you gain more precise response in the places sports cars care about most, especially cornering, braking, and steering feel.

Short sidewalls change behavior

A tall sidewall can flex more, but a short sidewall resists that movement. That difference matters the moment you turn the steering wheel. On a performance car such as a Porsche 911 or a Chevrolet Corvette, drivers want the car to react quickly, not after a small delay from tire flex. A low-profile tire reduces sidewall deflection, so the contact patch stays more stable during hard cornering. That gives you a clearer sense of what the front tires are doing. The ride gets firmer because there is less rubber sidewall to absorb road irregularities, and that's the trade most sports-car makers accept.

Handling gains are the point

People sometimes think the larger wheel is the whole story, but the real reason starts with control. Low-profile tires are commonly fitted to cars built for higher-speed handling because they support better lateral stability. If you push through a fast bend in something like a BMW M3, the tire's shorter sidewall helps the car feel more immediate and more settled. That does not mean comfort disappears completely, but bumps and rough pavement are transmitted more directly into the cabin. You notice expansion joints, patched asphalt, and sharp road edges more than you would in a family sedan using a taller tire.

Bigger wheels create room

The shorter sidewall usually comes with a larger wheel diameter, and that solves another performance need. Bigger wheels can make space for larger brake hardware. On cars with strong braking systems, including many high-output coupes and track-focused trims, larger brake discs and calipers need room inside the wheel. A low-profile setup helps package that hardware without making the full tire diameter impractical. So the choice is not just visual. The wheel and tire package supports braking performance as well as handling response.

There are real downsides

The trade is not subtle if you drive on rough streets every day. Low-profile tires are more easily upset by potholes, broken pavement, and curb impacts because there is less sidewall to absorb the hit before the wheel takes it. That can mean a harsher ride and a greater risk of wheel damage. Replacement cost can also climb, especially on larger wheel sizes. You may also notice more road noise. On a car set up for daily comfort, those drawbacks can outweigh the sharper response. On a sports car, makers accept them because steering precision and grip under load matter more to the car's job.
If you remove away the styling part, the reason is pretty direct. Sports cars do not use low-profile tires just to look serious, they use them because shorter sidewalls flex less, respond faster, and work better with larger brakes. You lose some comfort over rough roads, especially over potholes and patched city pavement, but you gain the kind of control performance cars are built around. So if you see a sports car riding firmly on thin sidewalls, you're looking at a choice aimed at response and stability, not a random design trend.
