Check The Glass First
When wipers leave water behind, the problem may not be the wiper itself. A dirty windshield can prevent the rubber edge from making consistent contact with the glass.
Oil residue, road grime, dust, and other deposits can create an uneven surface. These deposits may remain even after a normal rinse, so cleaning the glass should be one of our first checks.
After cleaning the windshield, we can gently check the surface with a clean microfiber cloth. If it feels rough or uneven, residue or small particles may still be present.
Use clean water and a suitable glass-cleaning method to remove the contamination. For stubborn deposits, work gradually rather than pressing hard against the glass.
Inspect The Wiper Blade
The rubber blade directly contacts the windshield, so its condition affects how evenly water is removed. With use, rubber can become hardened, worn, cracked, or deformed.
We can lift the wiper arm carefully and inspect the rubber edge. Look for visible damage, uneven sections, or areas that no longer sit evenly against the glass.
A worn blade may leave repeated lines, wet patches, or broad areas of water after several passes. If cleaning does not improve the result and the rubber is visibly deteriorated, replacing the blade or rubber insert may be appropriate.
The correct replacement depends on the vehicle and wiper design. We should check the owner manual or replacement instructions for the correct size and fitting method.
Remove Debris Carefully
Small particles can become trapped between the rubber blade and windshield. When the wipers operate, those particles can interfere with contact and may produce an unusual rubbing sound.
We can raise the wiper arm and inspect the underside of the blade. Remove loose debris carefully with clean water and a soft, clean material.
The windshield should also be checked for grit before operating the wipers. Running a dirty blade across dry or heavily contaminated glass can increase friction and may worsen the cleaning problem.
If the blade continues to make a harsh sound after cleaning, we should inspect it again rather than repeatedly operating it.
Clean The Blades Regularly
Regular cleaning can reduce the buildup of dust and fine particles on the rubber edge. We can include the blades in our normal vehicle-washing routine instead of waiting until streaks appear.
1. Raise the wiper arm according to the vehicle instructions.
2. Rinse the blade with clean water.
3. Gently wipe the rubber edge with a clean, suitable cloth.
4. Check the rubber for cracks, hard areas, or deformation.
5. Rinse away remaining particles before returning the blade to the windshield.
6. Lower the arm carefully so it does not strike the glass.
We should avoid scraping the rubber or applying excessive force. If the blade remains damaged after cleaning, replacement is more suitable than continued cleaning.
Know When To Seek Help
If streaking continues after the glass and blades have been cleaned, the issue may require closer inspection. We should consult the owner manual for vehicle-specific wiper instructions, especially when the wiper arm, attachment, or washer system appears abnormal.
We should also stop using the wipers if the blade is visibly damaged or if operation produces persistent abnormal noise. A qualified technician can inspect the system when the cause is not clear.
Keeping the windshield and wiper blades clean gives us a practical first step when wiping performance becomes poor. By checking the glass, clearing debris, and inspecting the rubber regularly, we can decide whether simple cleaning is enough or whether the blade needs replacement.
