A restricted radiator or coolant passage can cause overheating even when other components appear to be working normally. A professional inspection may be needed to determine whether the system requires cleaning or further repair.

What We Should Do

When an engine begins overheating, we should avoid continuing to drive simply to reach our destination. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off the engine, and allow it to cool. We should also avoid opening a hot cooling-system cap because pressurized coolant can cause serious burns.
Once the engine is cool, we can check for obvious leaks and inspect the coolant level according to the vehicle's instructions. If the temperature rises again after restarting, arranging proper inspection is safer than repeatedly driving and hoping the problem disappears.
